Day 6 – Maid-Rite is Made Right

According to the Maid-Rite website: In 1926, Fred Angell, a respected butcher in Muscatine, Iowa, combined a special blend and grind of the finest Midwestern ground beef with a selected recipe of secret spices and created the one and only Maid-Rite sandwich.

My sweet husband LOVES, and I do mean loves, these sandwiches. During childhood, his family would make trips to Illinois in the summer. One of the culinary eateries they had the pleasure of dining at was the Maid-Rite Diner. It was love at first bite!

During a road trip that we took in 2007, we sought out the Maid-Rite diner somewhere in the great state of Illinois. I had high hopes for the culinary treasure, but was not impressed, at least visually. I kept thinking of the TV show Rosanne, when they opened up the “loose-meat” diner. I discovered that the taste wasn’t unpleasant, but I just didn’t like looking at it. I know, weird.

Now fast forward to this past Thursday. As I arrived home, I was met at the front door by a box. A box with the words “Maid-Rite” on it. Oh dear. Are you serious? Really? My sweet husband’s dear brother and sweet sister-in-law wished us a very happy new year by sending this delicacy to our home. A dozen double-wrapped, frozen, Maid-Rite sandwiches, with a ziplock bag of chopped onions and sliced pickles.

I thawed out 3 of them to have with our salad for supper. I added mustard to his and bit of mayo to mine. I have to say, it was pretty dang good! I definitely liked it much better from the frozen stand point versus the fresh. Sometimes certain foods just taste better after being either frozen or refrigerated after a few days.

So,muchas gracias Steve and Troi!! We have 9 more in our freezer and I wonder how long they will last? I also wonder how some BBQ sauce would taste on a Maid-Rite sandwich? I think see and taste potential! What a great gift!!!!

I think I heard one of the secret ingredients was Coke or Pepsi. Is that correct Josh?
